Solanum nigrum (SN) Linn.
(Solanaceae) methanolic extract and its fractions were investigated
for their health-benefit properties, in particular with respect to
antioxidant activity and inhibitory ability toward key enzyme
hormone-sensitive lipase (HSL) with impact in diabetes and obesity.
The SN chloroform fraction was the most promising in regard to the
antioxidant effects, namely in the scavenging capacity of the free
radicals 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl and
2,2-azinobis[3-ethylbenzthiazoline]-6-sulfonic, as well as the most
effective inhibitor of HSL. In addition, the phytochemical screening
of the active fraction was also carried out. These results revealed
that chloroform fractions of the methanolic extract of SN bears
strong HSL inhibitory and antioxidant properties; it can, therefore,
be used as a potential antidiabetic herb. |
